What you can do from your phone
Arrow keys
Arrow keys with OK, Menu to go back, and Home.
Play/Pause and volume
Play/Pause and the volume buttons.
Sleep and wake
Put the Apple TV to sleep or wake it. Whether the TV itself turns on and off depends on its HDMI control.
Apps and titles
Open apps from the list the Apple TV reports, and start titles from Ask in Netflix or the Apple TV app.
On Apple TV each key is a single press; holding it doesn't repeat. Typing with your phone's keyboard and voice aren't available for Apple TV.
